About Us
Built entirely of the strong native timbers Kauri and Totara, The Grange is a Heritage Grade II-listed Victorian mansion originally constructed in 1874 for Rev. James West Stack, a missionary, clergyman, writer and interpreter.
This beautifully preserved historic homestead was sold in 1905 to Dr. William Irving and upon his departure to England in 1934, Dr. Francis Bennett moved in. For 4 generations Bennetts were born and raised here.
Dr. Bennett was a GP and most famously examined patient Pauline Parker; one of the 2 girls involved in the infamous Parker/Hulme murder case. This was later made into a motion picture by New Zealand's own Peter Jackson, called Heavenly Creatures, starring Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey. Some of the filming was completed in Dr. Bennett's then surgery at The Grange, which has since been converted into the owner's private residence.
Des and Tracey Ramsay have owned the homestead for over 10 years now and since taking ownership have added the modern, spacious Motel accommodation at the rear of the Guesthouse, keeping in style and taste with the original features offered by the grand, street facing mansion.
We look forward to having you stay with us here in the heart of Christchurch City.
